ABOUT
Museo Nivola in Orani, in the province of Nuoro, is dedicated to the life and work of Costantino Nivola (Orani 1911 – East Hampton 1988). Managed by the foundation of the same name, it was established in 1995, just a few years after the artist’s death, with the aim of preserving and promoting his research and legacy.
Over the years, the museum has presented projects focused on his work as well as on contemporary artists whose paths intersected with his, alongside exhibitions and residencies that explore contemporary artistic languages while continuing to cultivate subtle and meaningful connections with his intellectual and artistic heritage.
The building that houses the museum, divided into three main structures arranged along the hillside overlooking the town near the spring of Su Càntaru, was designed by Peter Chermayeff, and later developed over time by Gianfranco Crisci and Alessandro Floris. Conceived both as a monographic museum and as a vibrant laboratory where art, architecture, nature, and landscape engage in harmonious dialogue, it plays a crucial role in the study of Nivola’s work while also serving a civic function through the involvement of local communities in programs that, in keeping with the master’s vision, encourage participation and activate public space.
The permanent collection includes hundreds of sculptures, paintings, drawings, and many examples of the celebrated sandcasts, all bearing witness to every stage of Nivola’s artistic reflection and multidisciplinary experimentation. His work marked an important chapter in modern explorations of the relationship between sculpture, environment, and design practice. Through its ongoing activities, the Museo Nivola supports collective cultural growth and keeps alive the history and memory of the surrounding territory.
